56 get anthrax in Lalmonirhat

Lalmonirhat, Sep 7 (bdnews24.com) – Fifty-six people have been infected with anthrax at Kisamat Harati village in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila for the first time, the district civil surgeon has said.

Jahangir Alam Sarkar told bdnews24.com on Tuesday that a five-member medical team led by him has been giving treatments to the patients in the affected area.

"The number of patients might increase," he added.

Sirajul Islam Menhaz, an anthrax patient, said that Bhola Miah, a resident of the village, slaughtered his two ailing cows and sold their meat to the villagers. After that, they were infected with anthrax.

The locals alleged that the medical team was not providing proper treatments to the patients due to vaccines shortage.

Stolen hospital medicines seized in Mymensingh, one arrested

A Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-9) team recovered a huge quantity of stolen medicines from a residence in Bandher Bari area, adjacent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) yesterday noon.

Rab and police sources said, on secret information, a Rab team raided the house of Momtaz Uddin and recovered medicines including injection syringe, saline sets, surgical items, antibiotic injections and capsules worth Tk. one lakh. The medicines were stolen from the hospital, they said.

The Rab team also arrested Hanif Uddin, 40, the younger brother of Momtaz. He was taken to Rab office for interrogation and later handed over to Kotwali police.

During the raid, Director of MMCH Col Shahjahan, president and secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association local unit Dr. AFM Rafiqul Alam and Dr. Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan were present.

Contacted, the MMCH director told this correspondent that they have formed a five-member probe body headed by MMCH Assistant Director Dr. Shambhunath to investigate into alleged theft of medicines from the hospital.

Quoting sources he said Hanif Uddin is a flying medicine businessman in Charpara area in the district town.

Muggers stab Khulna AL leader, one held

Muggers stabbed Jobair Ahmed Khan Joba, office secretary of Khulna district Awami League, at Tootpara central road under Khulna Sadar Police Station early Saturday.

Police said Jobair, his wife Shaila, friend Jahir Hossain and his wife Liza arrived in the city in a night coach from Dhaka at around 3:30am and were going to Jobair's Tootpara residence on foot.

A gang of three swooped on them and snatched a cellphones, two gold rings and Tk 24,000 from the Awami League leader and his wife and a gold necklace, two diamond rings and two cellphones from Jahir and his wife.

As Jobair cried for help, the muggers stabbed in different parts of his body and left the scene, leaving him seriously injured. Zahir Hossain who lives in Italy with his wife accompanied the AL leader to Khulna from Dhaka to celebrate Eid.
